This is the first post on our blog — written the week we opened our workshop in Makoyeti West, Karen. We started DOP AUTOPAINT & DETAILING in 2019 with a two-bay garage, a small team, and a straightforward idea: that Nairobi's car owners deserved paintwork and detailing held to a genuinely international standard, without having to travel or accept shortcuts.
If you're reading this in 2019, thank you for finding us early. If you're reading this years later, this post still says what we set out to do from day one — and everything we've built since has been a natural extension of that same commitment. This is where the story starts.
Why we opened DOP
Before DOP, Nairobi had two options for car paintwork and detailing. On one end were high-end restoration studios that served collector cars but were inaccessible to most drivers — too expensive, too slow, and often booked months out. On the other end were quick-service wash bays and roadside garages that offered fast turnaround but rarely delivered a finish that could hold up to close inspection.
The middle ground — genuinely professional paintwork and detailing at fair, transparent pricing, delivered in reasonable time, by a team that treats every car like it matters — barely existed. We wanted to build that middle ground. Not the cheapest, not exclusively for classic car collections, but the studio that any Nairobi driver could trust with a car they care about.
So in early 2019, we found a workshop space in Karen, invested in proper equipment, and set a simple mandate: do the work properly, at a fair price, with everything documented and every customer informed. Nothing revolutionary, but surprisingly rare in this market at the time.
The standards we set from day one
From the very first car we worked on, we committed to four principles. They haven't changed since:
1. Preparation over speed
Most paint problems we see in this city come from rushed preparation. If a job is going to fail in six months, it's almost always because someone skipped a step. We promised from day one that we'd rather take an extra day than hand back work we weren't proud of — and that rule has held every year since.
2. Honest advice, even when it costs us money
If a customer's paint doesn't need correction, we'll say so. If a full respray would be a waste of their money, we'll tell them. If we can't safely do a job because the substrate is compromised, we'll turn it away. Selling unnecessary work is how you build a business for a year — advice you can trust is how you build one for a decade.
3. Documented, transparent pricing
Every job starts with a written estimate listing every stage of the work and its cost. No surprise additions, no vague line items, no charges that appear at handover without warning. If we discover something during a job that changes the scope, we call the customer first. This is basic, but it's not universal in the industry.
4. Written warranty on every job
Paintwork carries a 12-month workmanship warranty. Coatings and films carry their own manufacturer warranties. If something fails within the warranty window due to our work, we fix it. That written commitment has been a standard since week one, and it's been behind every customer relationship we've built since.
What we do
From opening day, we've offered services across three broad areas — everything our customers need to keep a car looking its best, all under one roof:
Fourteen services, delivered by trained technicians, using genuine materials, at honest prices. Everything under one roof in Karen so our customers don't have to send their car between three different workshops.
Where we're located
Our workshop is on Makoyeti West Road in the Karen area, easily accessible from Lang'ata Road, Ngong Road and the wider Nairobi area. We chose Karen because it's a central location for the customers we most wanted to serve — the kind of owner who values quality work and wants a workshop they can actually get to without half a day in traffic.
For customers who prefer not to drive out, we offer free pickup and delivery within the Karen area, and paid pickup and delivery elsewhere in Nairobi. From day one we knew that convenience had to be part of the service — because the owners who care most about their cars are often the ones with the least time to spare.
What we hoped for
Opening a business is an act of optimism. We had no guarantees on day one that there was enough demand in Nairobi for a workshop that positioned itself on quality first, affordability second. We bet that there was — and that enough car owners cared about their cars being treated properly to make it work.
The one thing we promised ourselves was that we wouldn't compromise on the standards we set. If the market wasn't ready for what we offered, we'd rather close than lower the quality bar and become another average garage. That attitude is what we've carried forward ever since — and it's what still defines every job that leaves our workshop today.
A note to the customers who trusted us early
The first few months of any new business are the hardest. Every customer who trusted us with their car in 2019 — before we had a portfolio, before we had reviews, before we had any reputation at all — took a chance on us based on nothing more than a conversation and a promise. We remember that.
To those customers: thank you. The word-of-mouth that grew from those early jobs is still how most of our current customers find us. Every referral traces back to someone who took a chance on DOP when we were just two bays and a sign. We don't forget that — and we don't take it for granted.

Frequently asked questions
Looking ahead
We opened in 2019 with two bays and a clear idea. What happens next — how the workshop grows, how the team develops, how the standards we set hold up against the pressures of running a business — will determine whether DOP becomes another workshop or something genuinely lasting.
Our commitment to our customers is the same now as it was on day one: every car that enters our workshop will be treated properly, every customer will be told the truth, and every job will be signed off only when it's genuinely finished. If we hold to that, everything else follows.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for the trust — whether you're a customer from 2019 or reading this years later. We're glad you found us.
